Ancient Myths

Last modified on 05/17/2011, 09:29 AM

Qu'est-ce qu'un mythe ? Une fable, une invention, un conte, des calembredaines ? Des vantardises, pour les mythos qui mitonnent ? Ou bien des témoignages sur les mystères oubliés ?

Wild thinking for Claude Levi-Strauss, clue of past enigmas for Mircea Eliade, magical mirror for Immanuel Velikovsky, mythologies keep on questioning us. Beneath their odd exterior, those unlikely chronicles authenticate each other.

Myths Are History Before History

In India, the saddhu (ascetic) is holding the stick and the drum with two faces, symbolizing the union of Shiva with ShaktiBeing eternal, mythologies remind us of a different world which is also quite familiar. Being efficient, they attract those who can believe in them and not.See Croire sans y croire Being real, they speak about magical agesSee L'âge d'or that came before ours. Often translated in different languages, chiefly by word of mouth,Like fairy tales.See l'or pur des contes they took colours and perfumes from all cultural backgrounds, while keeping the purity of their origins. Beyond those little differences, all myths speak the same, they tell us the same story, which authenticated them undoubtedly.

Despite the TV and the web, some fireside storytellers are remaining in the countryside. For how long? Some myths were written at different times in the past; they became the ancient cultures' founding verses, the different religions' holy books. After millenariums of oral transmission,  writing fixed them for ever, so they belong to that specific time. Therefore they were transformed into permanent dogmas. Other myths, more numerous, were spread orally in form of talesSee L'or pur des contes  and popular songs. This poor relation to myth drank in the bars, danced in the streets and worked in the fields.

In the hope that one day someone receives the message

Shiva saddhu giving his blessingUnder such a shabby appearance, what can be left of the original secret? How amazing as it can be, the changes they suffered from time injuries didn't betray them. Apparently their original message was powerful enough to protect them and save itself. These popular tales, these rural legends, spread silently in our collective unconscious. They are echoing in literature, opera, arts, cinema and comics. Humble as they are, you don't even see them at first sight.

Playing with young kids, we repeat innocently those ancient verses as all kids like it.

They form the basis of our worlwide culture, they enrich and beautify it. Definitely not naive, these poor man's myths represent the highest degree of science, of subtlety and knowledge human nature can ever have.

The Hesperides dancing in their garden at the foot of a golden appleShall we follow them on their giants' heels.See L'empreinte des géants Shall we shiver and then marvel at their strength. Shall we be moved in front of their achievements' greatness, and then dream up. When the adventure first started, a witness lived it. So can he whisper it in our ears. There are so many apples in the orchard of knowledge, so many gold fruits waiting for man to pick them. Let's dig wells in the past's huge depth. And so, sooner or later, the truth will spring from them.

It is really hard to stay loyal to it today, to escape from the matrix, to reject programmed dreams from Hollywood or elsewhere. Harder and harder to resist the big steamroller of progress. But easier too. In cities, it becomes harder. In the country, it gets easier from day to day, from hour to hour. They speak about us, about what Man used to be, about what kind of species we were, long time ago. And about what we were in this life, when we were children.

"In every woman there is the witch and the fairy." Xaviera SeguinolaAs everyone knows, a child naturally gets on well with hidden, tiny people. It is comforting for a child to find smaller beings; at this age, memories of the enchanted world are not totally forgotten. Until three years old, children have psychic powers. Fortunately, they don't use them very often. With time, education we think we give them breaks their magical link to the world. School atrophies these powers, hardly subsisting in a few great children, artists or visionaries. All those who still use their brain's right hemisphere.See L'excès rationaliste
